FF shows this page as i want it to look-- w/ a <ul> at the top of the page under the first 2 headings, under the nav. but, IE seems to be ignoring the <ul> and <li>'s for some reason.

i can't figure it out. can you find it? thanks!

IE not showing UL and LI's. puzzling me!

C'mon Jeff, you've been here long enough to know the answer to that one. Smile

IE and FF indent their lists differently. IE uses margins, FF uses padding. You have zeroed the margin-left of the ul element. Meaning that IE is rendering the bullet outside the UL area - where it can't be seen.

Specify a padding-left to get both IE and FF using the same value. It may also help to get the UL into "hasLayout" mode.

No it's not; it means "c'mon Jeff you have been around long enough to know the answer to that one" or put another way you have been posting and coding for long enough that you should know the answer to a very basic thing such as this.

No Chris isn't going to elaborate on this point nor is anyone else for that matter; once again the issue of HasLayout is mentioned every other post, has been described at great length by most of us, and countless links to the best examples and studies of this construct have been posted over and over again.

Jeff you are not a beginner otherwise we/I may have gone easier on you, you have been around on this forum for some time I suggest it's now time to start paying attention and maybe reading some posts on coding and answering a few questions rather than just writing posts. This may well help you understand some of this stuff better.

Oh and don't take umbrage at this it's meant in a kindly fashion even if it doesn't read as such.

Hugo.

Jeff, this has everything to do with the CSS Community, particularly those members of the community who run sites that provide tutorials on CSS.

Just go and study that first link then you'll know all you need to about HasLayout.

Edit: anyone notice it took the OP 16 days (a developer's lifetime) to come back to his first post?

IE not showing UL and LI's. puzzling me!

ahh, well i guess the time has come to provide a little reality check.

i used to respect thier opinions and heed the words and advice of most members here. it's unfortunate that the inconsistency and lack of integrity demonstrated by some so-called leaders has done nothing more than disappoint. i've even gone as far as to try to elicit a self-awareness from such respondants, but again to my disappointment and embarassment, the attempts have instead elicited foolish or childish remarks. it's a shame that a community that i was once proud to be a part of has made a mockery of itself-- with some of its most capable and would-be honorable, great men and women waving the flag.

it has become little more than a waste of time to participate, as is certainly evidenced by this very thread.

now, put your forefinger to your thumb and squeeze and you'll have a pretty good idea of the bit of regard i've come to have for it all.

will you waste more of your time and mine to further corroborate the evidence? or will you take my advice; step back, and try, difficult as it might be, to look at my viewpoint, look at yourselves, and consider the probable first impression of other passers by as they try to choose a forum for learning and discussing CSS.

losing my faith in you in such a way is truly a sad feeling. i leave you today with genuine disgust and disappointment.

Oh c'mon lighten up Jeff.
some words spring to mind: chaffed, joshed, ribbed; look them up they all have a commonality of playfulness.

We most certainly have not made a mockery of ourselves Shock

I could go on but I am tired and shall respond further on the morrow.

Hugo.

Seems to be a case of over-reactionitis going around this weekend. Granted, maybe your question wasn't answered directly, but no-one was having a go at you personally Jeff. And it's not like this sort of off topic banter is a feature of the forum - it's the silly season, gotta expect a bit of silliness. Wink

That must be it. Vacations and such. I've noticed it in all of one other thread. I like to have a laugh once or twice (or more) a day, it is good for the health. Smile

Wow!, sorry Jeff.

Back to my original post. I honestly thought you would know the answer, but maybe you were having a bad day and just hadn't made the connection. Its a pretty common problem ("Where'd my bullets go? ... My list doesn't work in IE") and I assumed you had been around the forum long enough, helped enough people yourself, got to know the people here, started your own light-hearted posts to be amenable to a little light hearted banter.

Fwiw, the answer is in my post and the technical bits are pretty much verbatim what I have said in answering others (example). Heck, I am not even disappointed that the poster couldn't wait for an answer, hehe.

Anyways, I'm sorry my post came across the way it did and I'm sorry you're considering leaving the forums. You're a good bloke to have around.

Jeff - lighten up or go live in a monastery.

I've just read this thread for the first time and cracked up at the humorous bits. I was not laughing at the fact that you do not understand the finer points of CSS lists; but at the usual funny twists and intelligently-humorous asides that mark this forum apart from most others. As Chris says, you have been part of this community spirit for quite a while so don't now go getting all upset and over-sensitive as if the world is ganging up against you.

If anyone was being cuttingly rude here, I would be the first to jump to your defence. But that's not the case. This is just social banter and friendly jesting in action. It is the thing that keeps most of the regulars coming back here day after day, which means that good CSS advice is always at hand for those who want to learn. One goes with the other. Take the banter away and the regulars will probably go too. Then the good advice dries up and CSS novices will have to use Google more often.

You have had more than your fair share of help and advice from the regulars on this forum. They have given you many hours of their time, yet now you insult them because you have over-reacted in an entirely unreasonable way. I now feel the need to turn your own words against you...

Losing my faith in you in such a way is truly a sad feeling. I leave you today with genuine disgust and disappointment.

Life's a b*tch and then you die!
