Hi

I haven't been here in a while, lots of personal problems.

Anyway I have just had a burst of creativity and re-designed loads of my old sites so now I would just like to hear your ideas on the first of them.

Some of you might remember the old design but then again you might not so I left it up for comparison.

[link removed by poster]

Hope you find it a vast improvement like I do.

Would love your opinions on my re-design.

Where's that robot? I liked the robot a lot. Seriously, though, here's what I think:

cons

- I think the site is too narrow
- shorter pages look bad (links.htm)
- where is your site's name (JS Web Design)?
- content seems sparse now (didn't seem that way before)
- not that i can talk, but it seems the site it lacking a unified feel. the trees are interesting, but the meaning is lost without a reason for putting them there. what do the trees mean to you? The main trouble is that you're relying on the navigation area to carry the aesthetic load and i'm not sure it can cut it.

pros

- fast loading, validation, etc...
- improved background image

summary

Overall, I think the old design is better. True, it was lacking some of the graphical flare found in the new design, but the new design is less functional. Again, I don't think relying on the nav area for aesthetic cluster damage is a smart idea. Although it's a very cool nav area, it can't convey the meaning I think you're after.

Can you pull some of the new improvements and add them to the old site? If you don't want to do that, can you support the tree theme more fully? Hopefully, some of this advice can help you.

In a month or so, I'm going to be redesigning my POS site, and I'll likely be facing the same obstacles you're now facing. Hopefully, those newly read design theory books will pay off a bit.

Hmmm. I think you're probably right.

I wanted to have a stripped back and simple site with solid code which I have achieved. I thought the other one was too cluttered and had far too much irrelivant information.

I think I will follow on through with the tree theme if I can think of a way to do that. I'm not the best designer out there but I am certainly getting better.

I was originally intending to put the nav under the title image in simple horizontal blocks but then an accident happened and they ended up over the image and I thought it looked cool.

Think normal blocks for nav under the image might be a bit borring like what most sites have, but atleast I could go through with my idea of a different photograph on each page maybe.

Anybody notice any code problems or browser bodges?

Thanks

I think I like the old one better, too. Can't nail down what it is so I think it's just a subjective comment on my part.

Curious, but how do you do the arrows (raquos?) on the nav like that? That was pretty neat.

I really don't care for the green dots. The text on top of them is quite difficult to read and the color doesn't feel like it belongs.

The old design looked more professional IMO, not that the new design isnt professional. Just saying the old design attracted me more then the new one. Nice design by the way. Loks good to the eye

heh yea, ripped for sure, and badly done, too.

i like your site. i can't see the old one for comparison's sake, but i like the new one. i'm not a fan of the greenish tone you chose, but that's my only gripe with it. i'm on a 1280 resolution, and while the site does look narrow and the background image takes up most of the screen, i don't mind it one bit. it looks polished, like it was done with care.. there are no spelling mistakes and the text is well formed (there's nothing like bad grammar to bust a professional looking site)..

i checked out your portfolio too, and while it's nothing revolutionary, you make well-balanced sites, and more importantly, sticking to the W3C standard while you're at it..

all in all, congratulations.. you got yourself a top-notch site. Smile

It's piss funny isn't it.

I emailed them but haven't had a reply. I only found it because it showed up in my logs as a referer, don't know why but it did.

Don'y realy care too much, because they will clearly make a bodge efort.

I hate my site anyway, but due to other things I have posponed my re-design until I have time. Some bits just don't work and others do so i'll start fresh for sure.

Here's to hotlinking and design theft. Cheers.

Oh, it's definitely a strong improvement compared to your old layout. Very vibrant and catchy especially that page fold graphic at the bottom . Solid work. Laughing out loud

--- wait... having read the other posts, am I the only one who likes JS's new design? Aw... it seemed nice though.

Hi

You're actually looking at a newer design now. Which I believe is really good.

Here's the two originally compared in this thread.

{LINK REMOVED BY POSTER]

and the newer one

{LINK REMOVED BY POSTER]

I am now at version 4 which I really love and I won't be changing for anybody. {LINK REMOVED BY POSTER]

Glad you like it. Incidently that page curl isn't just for austhetics, when clicked it shows the page source.

Yeah version 3 sucks, I came to realise that.

I'm just a really slow designer that's never happy. But version 4 makes me happier than anything I have done so I think I have it now and don't think I will mess for quite a while now. Hopefully.
