Would someone please have a look at
http://www.kamloopsnews.ca/test/modern.html
and tell me why the content is pushed down?
It seems to want to center vertically if there isn't much text, as with this page.

Page now validates.
Problem seems to exist in IE6 and IE5 Mac.

Well, the page almost validates
This Page Is Tentatively Valid XHTML 1.0 Strict
Anyway, there you have it. Now all you have to do is get rid of the tables for layout and you'll have something there.

Did you test it in IE6?

I don't have access to IE6 during the weekend, but I find the content is still being pushed down in Firefox 1.0.6 (Mac). Maybe they don't like the table.

The sidebar, the logo and the middle content should all be about half an inch higher. The only thing that looks right are the ads in the section on the right. You could try http://www.kamloopsnews.ca/test/index.html or news.html to see what I mean.
As an experiment, I at one time put more text in the middle section of modern.html, and it seemed to push everything up to where it should be.
I'm with you on tables. This is a compromise for people with older browsers. Stats show we still get them in the hundreds at our website.

I made a submission to browsershots.org and got these results:

Firefox 1.0.4 and MSIE 6.0 display wrong. Safari 2.0 displays right.

How many IE3 hits do you get?

Looks like I found a solution, but I'll probably get drummed out of the forum for it: two tables instead of one.
I might try to create an all-CSS solution that works in Navigator 4, but today is not the day.
Thanks for your help and patience.

I swear, one of these days I will refuse help until the tables are deleted. ONE OF THESE DAYS!!!

I wouldn't waste my time bothering about NS4.

Actually, I went ahead and did it anyway. It's a little buggy in NS4 when your resize a window, but there are no tables and none of the strangeness associated with them.
Here's my theory about Netscape 4 people: they simply can't afford to upgrade from an ancient computer, they haven't a clue about how to upgrade, or their unenlightened employer has stuck them with it. In any case, I kinda feel sorry for them.
On the other hand, they're no doubt used to seeing lots of websites displaying poorly, so any quirkiness at our website will seem like par for the course to them.
