This a forum for help on matters to do with HTML /CSS web page coding, your question is a graphics based one and such is outside the scope of this forum.
We can lend some assistance with the code involved in placing your graphics, but adding effects or manipulating graphics is a different subject.
What you are wanting to achieve is something done with a graphics software programme such as Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or Fireworks.
When you have one of these programmes then you will be able to add effects to your backgrounds and if you need help with that there are many forums that are dedicated to helping with graphics and specific graphics programmes.
