i can easily name 5 - 10 members of this forum-- all in about 10 seconds or less (and more if i had more time to think!), for whom i have great respect and admiration, who i have NEVER (to my recollection) seen ANY of their work, yet they provide a wealth of invaluable knowledge by the second here every day. i must wonder, do they even really know html? heehee. kidding.
what i'm about to say isn't intended for mods exclusively-- i merely came up w/ the idea after my first statement there. now, here's my idea...okay, when i hit preview, it looked kinda crass, but i'm still supporting the idea. maybe i'm just shy to speak up like this.
the first semi-annual CSS Olympics:
how about add a little friendly sportsmanship to the forum-- enable some sort of polling system for a "site of the day / week / month" or some such time-span, such that we can ALL get in there and vote and whichever site comes out on top, it gets some kind of featured exposure on the front page of the forum (or countless alternative "reward" options if we don't want it on the front page). there could be different scoring categories: overall presentation, ingenuity, legibility, "validation", "style", etc.. or, it could just be a generic poll type thing.
i can think of SEVERAL reasons why this is a good idea, but perhaps the most important reason to do such a thing would be the inspiration it would spread, and w/ a little sense of friendly competition, sometimes it brings out the best in us. it doesn't have to be a "competition" per se, but you know what i mean.
here's some reasons to do it. those opposed, please feel free to reply w/ reasons not to do it:
- it will give us a reason to get away from our own work for a while, to actually look at some other ideas-- the ideas of people who we "talk" with daily, not some ALA publisher who maybe a handfull of people here might know on a first name basis-- the idea being it's often a great way to spark one's own creative flow-- that which is all too often stagnate, or lost within an obsession over some crazy z-index , absolute float, anything which we obsess over
- it will boost community comaradarie, participation, most importantly commentary from those who are often stuck on the "how do i do this" end of the conversation (myself included), instead of saying "i think 'this' about that"
- it will give EVERYONE a reason to think of creative ways to do things, and will become a most excellent learning tool / rocket fuel for tutorials in disguise
- give everyone a chance to show their work w/out having to feel as if they're showing it off, or as if they are being burdonsome.
- help us to learn the do's and don'ts of design-- by example, and basically get a feel for what's goign on in each other's heads (one mans art is another mans art-school-girl-of-doom)
- provide a singular resource by which we all might focus interesting, meaningful banter.
what do you think?
i have no idea why i came here to say that! i was distracted again by a shiney metal object, that being the open invite for forum suggestions.

Hi jsabarese,
Matt Lenz just set up a new site http://stylereactor.net/ to display well styled sites.
I have suggested he look at adding a voting system which we may be able to plug into via rss.

hey, i haven't had the chance to preview yet the vast content you've provided at those links, but thank you for doing so.
if there's not already a "good examples to live by" type sticky or section at the portal, perhaps what you have listed here would be great additions! maybe, not unlike the Useful Links page, an "examples" page in which, like the Usefuls page, it would have very concise defs of each URL.
ya think>?
hehe.
EDIT:
holy heck there's some bad-!ss designers represented at those URLs!
(actually, that coming after only checking ONE so far-- wolfcrys fave)
i think it's a great idea! what do you think?
I think it is a good idea - I hardly ever look at any member's personal sites, only those posted in site checks.
I'll be honest, I haven't created a website in months. I'm too lazy but I d like helping people with interesting CSS problems.
