Can anyone please tell me why there is that empty space at the bottom of the page I can't get rid of?

its the relative positioning
its the relative positioning you have set on #bottom. You need to have a clear understanding of how css positioning works before you use it.
First basic few steps in building a webpage
1. Gather and collect content.
2. Organize the content into meaningful semantic valid HTML
3. Design the prototype
4. Style using CSS
