background when repeat height 100% when set to position absolute

if you scale the window down (so you need a horizontal scroll) you'll see for the time being the background object repeats (when set to fixed) but the moment you set it to position: absolute (which is what I need it to be) it doesnt repeat... it doesnt full the height of the screen.
