Hi downtap,
That's fine, it means I need to get moving and get something organised.

There's quite a lot to consider running it as a competition.

Resolved

I was thinking of having a little button or something that the creator of the thread can click to say when a thread has been resolved.

This would allow people who wanted to answer the question, to know it had been solved so there would be little reason to answer.

You could also make it so when you click for recent posts that it only shows still active posts.

Furthermore, it would allow users of the site to be able to search for only resolved questions allowing them to be certain of an answer in the thread.

Thanks,
LucyM

Mod comment: Lucy these are good ideas, there is presently a thread running on forum improvements that are being actioned later in the year, where requests for thoughts/suggestions are being collated. I'll graft this comment to that thread for you.

Thanks,
LucyM

Navigation and international time zones

There are two little improvements/cake frosting that I'd like to see.

  1. Navigation: This has been mentioned, but we really could use the ability to go directly to page(Drunk two on. Along with that, links at the top of each page to the others in that thread would be a usable complement to those at the bottom of the page.

Please use the . Browsers such as Lynx, and Firefox with the navigation addon (it was integral up to Moz 1.Innocent support the rel attribute.

  2. This is frosting on the cake, but I would really appreciate having the member's timezone as part of the identifier.

cheers,

gary

Thanks for all the comments

Thanks for all the comments so far.
I am working through some of them and have another question.

a) We could make the bestreply link close the comment to further posts and mark it solved.
b) Or we could have another link do that.

What do you think.
My preference leans towards b) but I can see merit in both cases.

Gary do you mean have the members timezone display under their location beside the post.

Design competition, I have stalled on this as I really have a lot of other things I am doing and I am still not certain a competition is the best way forward.

Yep. I think it would give a sense of degree of urgency or expectation. Like why does my message to you, bright and early Monday morning not get an answer for hours and hours? What do you mean it's midnight there? Wink

cheers,

gary

Essentially not a great idea? one is assuming that the novice poster can actually gauge what constitutes a best reply, they might close off a post with a best reply that to those that perhaps know better is not the best solution, but it may go unnoticed as closed but indicating a poor solution, the OP might have just thought that a solution had been found when in fact top:-100px was simply missing the point and compounding issues, looked as though it worked at the time!

On long threads i.e running

On long threads i.e running to more than one page we could do with the submission of replies refreshing to that last page rather than the thread start.

I'm looking at Ajax to submit the new comments so a page refresh may be irrelevant, unless you have JavaScript disabled. There's still much to look at before this is ready.

Tony don't let the kerfuffle

Tony don't let the kerfuffle over at Carsonified put you off a competition. Boag explained it was tongue-in-cheek to begin with and a competition is a competition, it has always been the case that it's up to the individual to decide whether or not they will enter, 1 winner=1 prize (even if it's just the glory of having their credit on the site).

Personally I find it somewhat laughable that people got so heated over at Carsonified and kept quotingno-spec who have this request...

"If you are interested in contributing a poster design for usage in promoting NO!SPEC just contact us for the logo files."

No spec work - they're just asking for freebies instead!

Hi Smee,
I missed that whole debate.
My concern with running the redesign as contest is more to do with all the features required and being able to clearly define what I am after.

There are a lot of graphics that I want as part of the design so having someone close at hand would be useful.

Maybe I should stop worrying about the detail and start off with a new logo and work from that for the overall design.

In that case you probably didn't miss much except the usual "yes it is!" or "No, it isn't" Laughing out loud Just didn't want you to get worried about it here.

What a champion idea! The beginning is always a good place to start and no doubt further ideas and suggestions will flow, or firm up, from it. Smile

Hi Ali,
I will still be using Drupal, just upgrading to a new version, adding more features and re-theming.

Tony, thanks for replying,

Tony, thanks for replying, but I was really hoping that the forum software would be upgraded this time. The drupal forum software isn't meant for large boards like this and something like phpbb would be better suited with more features for the users plus drupal to phpbb conversion is a snap with the scripts available. Drupal would still be useful for publishing but since most of the users do not contribute to the content on the website besides the forum separating these two components might be a good idea and would improve the usability a lot. I know phpbb2 used to be a hog but the 3.x series seems to be light and the feature set rivals the commercial software and is far beyond the drupal forum. Hope you consider this suggestion

I can definitely understand that having a contest for the overall design might be a little challenging, especially with all the small graphics that may be all over the place, and not knowing the accessibility of the person who has the winning design. I do agree, that starting with the logo first would be a great place to start. For me, as a designer, the logo/brand is usually the first place I look to draw inspiration for the overall design of a site. For example, If a logo is really busy, I might utilize more white space to emphasize the brand and keep the site from looking too busy.

Anyways, my offer still stands for offering help if you need it.

Good luck!

I 'new' I'd think of something else

Oooh, I thought of another mini one!

When I popped on today it said there were 13 new on this thread so I clicked on it... but then I had to click through to page 2 and by the time I'd done that, the thread had considered me to have read all the new ones so I no-longer get the 'new' message.

Now, I know this is largely due to my awful memory, I just thought it would be nice to keep the new message on a post even if it's not on the first page Smile

Cheers,

J

Thanks downtap, that's a great offer and I may take you up on it. I'd love to see some more logo's when you have some free time. Feel free to email me to discuss ideas.
I still have a lot to do before the upgrade and other work keeps getting in the way so don't rush.

Ali, originally the forum was phpbb and the rest of the site was hacked together php scripts. I moved the whole lot to Drupal to manage it all with one system and am happy with the move. We did lose some features and there were complaints. This is the chance for the community to let me know what features it misses or would like. I am sure phpbb has improved a lot, but I have no intention of moving back or combining it with Drupal. Upgrading one system is fine managing upgrades with two combined systems increases the complexity significantly.
It's really the people that make a great community.

Burlster, I am looking at making the new link work across pages, so you would be able to go directly to the first new post. Hopefully that will solve that issue.

I also think that maybe

I also think that maybe adding a "Flag This" that any user can click on that would notify mods of potential spam, harassment, etc.
Sort of like Craigs List.

Hi Tony and all, First, let

Hi Tony and all,

First, let me congratulate you on a great resource. I can't count how many issues have been resolved by trucking through this site. So a big thank you from me.

Some things I would love to see. ( Forgive me if they have been mentioned, but this is a very long thread.)

1. A sub-forum dedicated to skinning CMS - Joomla, Drupal, CMS made simple, and etc

2. A sub-forum dedicated to discussions regarding the intersections of CSS and scripting languages. ie, PHP, Javascript, and etc.

Regards,
Rob

Life's a journey. Enjoy the trip.

Phreestyle has a good plan!

Yeah! The latter of Phreestyles suggestions is great... a forumy place to discuss integrating CSS with awkward controls that generate themselves dynamically in say ASP.NET.

By the way Tonster, it would appear IE8 adds a scroll bar to your smiley box Wink. IE7 compatibility mode solves the issue
