This forum is nearly 6 years old, so it is time for a major upgrade.
Firstly let me make it clear that it wont happen straight away, but will happen sometime this year.
The whole site is up for review, so I want to hear your ideas for improvement.

Here's a couple of things I am currently considering:

  • Getting rid of the News Tab, I don't think it is used very often ( I should check the stats to be sure).

  • Cleaning up the links page

  • Giving members control over what block content they see.

  • Placing the reply form at the bottom of each page, so you don't need to go to another page just to comment.

  • Bringing back more stats (hey, I like stats)

  • Adding user badges, (CSS, PHP, DOM, jQuery ...) to show what you are good at.

  • I like the idea of donating to one laptop, but we don't seem to be getting much of a response, so any ideas for improvement would be good.

  • Possibly have a tip system where if someone saves your bacon you can tip them directly.

  • Best reply, I like this idea (ok, I created it) and would like to tie it into a rank system, yes we can get rid of the medal icon Sad

  • I'd like to have some cool icons that members can put on their own site to show they are a member here and possibly show their rank automatically.

So we will lose some features and gain others.
This is a community so I want to here from you what features you would like, what you can't do without, and what you want to get rid of.

I could like to see the code

I could like to see the code tag updated.
Maybe have different languages that color code accordingly... have seen this in other forums and it helps me to read code when it's all colorful.

Well, I browse and read

Well, I browse and read these forums nearly daily, although I don't post too much. Still feel a little uncomfortable at times helping out when there are so many extremely talented people. I'm a graphics designer, and drupal guy, so if there's anything I can help with to give back to everything I've learned from here, I'd be glad to. I can probably help more with the graphics end, as I know Tony is amazing at Drupal.

I'd like to second the ideas of tags of what you're good at, css/java/etc. I think that would definitely help when knowing the specialties of who is helping you.

I also like the idea of maybe creating a membership icon for people to put on their own sites. I'd definitely put that on my design company's site. Not sure if you want to take it this far, but maybe something similar to what the Drupal Association does? Meaning, have a cheap or free individual membership, and second level organization membership? The idea that the funds received could go to the One Laptop program and/or directly to the upkeep of csscreator?

I definitely think links can be cleaned up a lot. Maybe sort them by type of a resource?

Lastly, what about a tutorials section? Meaning, there are posts stickied with really helpful advice, I think for the new visitor they sometimes get overlooked and may not be as easy to find as organized on one page directly linked on the main nav. I don't know, just a thought.

Feel free to contact me if you think there's anything I can help with.

Get rid of the news tab, news just gets lost that way on a secondary page, but don't loose news feeds you have more than enough room for a second sidebar to the right, put the news feeds in there where they can be seen but only the headlines and truncated text, also take feed from places such as ALA?

Perhaps it could be

Perhaps it could be organised a little better but they aren't just stickies. How far do we want to go in becoming a Sitepoint clone though? personally I'd rather explore other avenues than guides, every man and their dog has written guides, just look at Gary Tongue

First step should be to re-organise the link page along the lines of a much clearer resource centre, perhaps mini tuts could go in there, but firstly it should be an up to date resource pointer to sites of established provenance, oh and I suppose that will have to include Gary :rolleyes:

Thanks for the feedback.

I like the idea of the news in a block on the side.
Feel free to offer suggestions for feeds to use.

We can replace the news tab with a link to the how to section, which would make them more accessible.
Should we open them up for comments.

Anyway keep the ideas coming.

'news' tab to 'how to' tab

'news' tab to 'how to' tab makes sense and should allow for a improved layout and grouping of any content in there.

We did discuss opening up comments on guides way back and I think we decided that it could just become messy with comments going on forever, a simple help guide becomes something that one has to trawl through 4 pages of comments just in case there was something pertinent to the original post that ought to be absorbed? If they were opened up I would suggest that like better blogs comments are not considered ongoing for ever but get closed when all sensible comments appear to have been made; so perhaps comments are open for an initial period then closed after say... a week?

I think we need to encourage

I think we need to encourage new users to give details of their initial experiences at the site. As a regular I only use two buttons, 99% of the time, "Recent Posts" and if I haven't visited in a long time "My Recent Posts". Any change you make will be disruptive for me until I can find those two links without thinking Wink

Yes, that is what I meant. I reread my post and realise the first sentence isn't as clear as I would like it, I mean to try to get some new users to post in this thread about what they like and don't like when they are newcomers. Apart from downtap, no one with under 2,000 posts has expressed an opinion and to be fair, you probably couldn't get rid of us if you tried Wink

The idea of changing the news link to a link direct to the how to section is a good idea. I know when I was first learning, I lived in that forum going through all of the pages. That, IMO, is a strong point of this site.

Well, here goes FWIW... 1.

Well, here goes FWIW...

1. Never really read the News tab so don't mind where it goes as long as it's not in my way Smile

2. Links page is Very Important on a forum like this I think. Went there once or twice in the beginning to find most of them didn't work so didn't go back. Sad

3. Not sure I understand this?

4. Reply form at the bottom would be brilliant!!! Could refer to and quote as many posts as one likes.

5. Stats. Hmmm...okaaaay - happy to let you have your way for the moment and see what you present us with Smile

6. User badges. What about my specialty, Questions?

7. I quite like the laptop idea but need to somehow encourage people who have been helped to toss in a little.

8. By 'tip system' do you mean the "thank this poster" I've seen elsewhere? If so yes.

9. I like Best Reply because tips and BR are small thanks for the work the regulars put in here. We just don't think much of the particular icon you chose Laughing out loud My problem is that I get so many good replies I often want to award 2 or 3!

10. I'm never going to put it on my page if I ever get one - I wouldn't want people to know what a duffer I am. :blushing: Howsumever I think it would be nice for others to show their participation here.

~~~~ Mine follow...
11. Make the Search button blue? People seem to miss it. In fact make them all blue Smile
12. When people sign up as members, throw them to a simple page which says "if you post without a Doctype or validating at (W3C link) you will be asked to do so - save us both some time. If you want to post code, wrap it in
[/ code] tags. (Tyssen, bless him, has tried valiantly to encourage this for 2 years that I know of, but I think people need both tags - they don't seem to understand the opening without the closing and the word 'wwrap'. And I'm sure people have been clicking his code image, I did! <img src="http://csscreator.com/sites/all/modules/smileys/packs/Roving/lol.png" title="Laughing out loud" alt="Laughing out loud" class="smiley-content" /> Just to see) Then a bit which says "Check the (HowToPostaQuestion link) and try searching the forum first" Then a link to wherever you put/call the How To forum.
13. I think the How Tos are a brilliant resource, but need to be in one place. I think there are 3 different How to Post/Ask a Question spread over a couple of forums - and they have different titles. The same with Doctype - it doesn't hurt to have 3 levels of understanding (Hugo, TPH and Burlster) but put them together. I agree with Hugo in that if you open them up they'll be never ending - folk can post a question if they have one - or the open for a week maybe.
14. The "Mod Blog" doesn't get updated enough to be Home page all the time...like all regulars I would really like to get straight into Recent Posts. "Make RP my sign-in page" in Account details? Don't change the ability to login on the page where you are reading a post though - really like that.
15 When I do want to go to another forum it's a long way round...list them somewhere on the left/top?
16. "Track/don't track" on the thread, so we can turn them off?
17. [1,2...last] against title in Recent Posts?  Okay, okay I know I'm the only one who usually needs it  :blushing:
Well you <span style="font-style:italic">did</span> ask!!!! I'll keep thinking :)
ETA: Please back up <span style="font-weight:bold"><span style="font-style:italic">all</span></span> my Important Stuff before you touch one line of code! I'm relying on you here...I shall be <span style="font-style:italic">distraught</span> if all that info goes missing!
18. A new set of <span style="font-style:italic">nice</span> smilies please <img src="http://csscreator.com/sites/all/modules/smileys/packs/Roving/smile.png" title="Smile" alt="Smile" class="smiley-content" /> If anyone really winked at me like that I'd run a mile!!!!
Great ideas, keep them
Great ideas, keep them rolling.
When the time comes, I would love to find someone to maintain the links.
I think the moderators have enough on their hands so maybe someone else would like to step up and take that roll.
We could have them as user submitted but I think we would get to much spam.
11. Hopefully the whole site will be redesigned and blue may not be an option.
12. 13. Good suggestions that are possible.
14. I like this a lot as Recent Posts is the first page I land on, it may need a little restructuring.
15. yes good idea.
17. My only concern is the database load looking up the number of pages for each of those links could be nasty. The recent posts is already a pretty heavy page in that respect.
18. But you like blue. I will look into better smilies.
Since I can't answer
Since I can't answer questions even though I make the occasional foray, I could volunteer to update the links if you wish - and trust me enough. It's little enough to give back to a great bunch of guys who have been so unstinting with their help for my every little problem Smile
11. Blue buttons - didn't realise you meant a whole new paint job! I'm plumping for burgundy and silver.
17. Oh well...maybe I'll get better at it Smile
18. Blue. Actually I don't much, in that it seems to be the default colour of the web - green's my favourite colour (and pink), but see 11 above. Anything but orange! New smilies would be luverly. Ta muchly.
Get the picture?
Ooooh,
This is probably just me not being too sharp BUT, I know you can upload images and I know you can embed images. Could doing both be made easier? I.e. maybe it generates the code for you to embed your attached images in your posts, or perhaps even a check box that actually does it for you? That's just me thinking out loud... I know you can take the URL it gives you when you've uploaded the file and use that to embed it, just wondering if we couldn't make this simpler for beginners?
Cheers Smile
I just had another thought.
I just had another thought. Just an idea, probably not a good one. Smile What about an easier ability for mods or the OP to mark topics Solved. I know right now you can change the subject to [SOLVED], but I don't think that gets used really that much. Maybe something similar, but not exactly, to what experts-exchange does. They put the onus on the OP to mark a reply post as an acceptable solution. I think I see quite a bit of people post, a solution posted and then nothing. I don't know, maybe that would end up being just like the best reply in that not very many people use it.
If we could do this and have it close that thread as well, might help reduce the spammers grabbing old threads and hijacking them along with people not paying attention and reviving a 4 year old thread trying to "help" the OP who hasn't logged in since the question was posted.
Closing comments would be possible, it could be done after a specific time without activity, say 1 month, or by the author or a mod marking it solved.
Making images easier can also be added.
OMG!
Having the ability for us regs who spend too much time rehearsing the same lines over and over "Post all code" "Validate" "Faux Columns" etc having a cheat box that is filled with the HOWTO links and Sticky Rules links so we can easily just push one of the links and it will go into the reply box for us.
I hate having to dig up some of the good ole tutorials - maybe having it dynamically generate with some and the ability for us to individually edit remove and add links to it.
So Awesome!
Hmmmm...
Oh yeah!
A personalised short list of cheat messages we can programme in... Maybe 5 signature size sentences one can write then click at any time in the future to embed in a message. Whether that be "Validate or die", or a cheesey pick up line... it would be good to be able to use them instantly and save time.
Incidentally... can't remember where I heard this but my favorite pick up line is 'Fat Penguin'. When they enquire what you're on about you then say "Sorry, I was just trying to think of something that would break the ice".
Right, back to work for me...
Ok one thing I would like to
Ok one thing I would like to say is, I have been lead on my side reading this thread through for around 10 mins now (yes I know I read slow) and now my spine is dead. BAD TIMES.
I think rather thank backing up this site with how to's I would suggest maybe partnering up with a tutorial specific site that can host our tutorials/how to's.
Now the number pages could reduce server load dramatically actually (not meaning to be a smart arse) limiting the number of posts and threads display on each page would mean retreiving less from the database and returning less also.
Now the specialty idea is excellent, for e example I wouldn't even remotely class myself as an expert at CSS but however I know allot more when it comes to the programming side for example JavaScript, AJAX & PHP. So people knowing what I am best at might let them know that I could be talking complete and utter garbage as always.
Ok so I joined a while back and didn't really stay to active for to long (a couple of months) then I stopped more or less completely viewing and contributing to CSSCreator.
However I promise I will get myself up to Leader with Cupid that is my challenge.
And that brings me onto my next idea whilst looking earlier I noticed the users page doesn't exist or isn't easy to find. Maybe we could make it create it or make it easier to find.
Also maybe (I know this sound childish) incentives could be an idea. For example introducing effective less admin functions (can't think of any right now) this could encourage new users to become a part of the community and join in.
Also I think the site needs a complete JavaScript overhaul, the reason most people probably aren't finding the site user friendly is because there is barely any JavaScript involved. Simple things like logging in could be done without page refresh as well as the profile pages I use the track tab alot and I know it takes a while to load so maybe if you load that with the main profile page and then hide the main profile page when the link is clicked and show the track page.
I think it is little things like this that help make sites more user friendly.
By the way guys I am really going to try to become part of you Tongue haha no seriously I want to be a guru or a leader it just sounds cool Laughing out loud.
Recently joined here myself.
Recently joined here myself. Great information, great people (from what I've seen in my week long stay), etc..
There are only a couple things so far that I wouldn't mind seeing. Nothing major mind you, but I'm all about those subtle things that make your stay a bit more friendly.
Ok, enough rambling..
1) I would love either having all of the current posts in a thread listed on the same page when you go to reply, or (as mentioned in the initial post I believe) having a "quick reply" function that doesn't jump you to a different page. I've been wanting to reply many times to things and I want to reference something that was said, or can't remember a previous poster's name, and it's difficult to check on the fly.
2) A navigation string at the bottom of pages, and a "back to top" link at the bottom of the page. Some of these pages get long, and while hitting "back" in your browser works well enough, having a navigation string (home > next level > next level > you are here) would be great to move around a bit quicker. Being able to jump up to the initial post quickly would be nice too.
Other than those minor things, I haven't noticed much that needs to be changed. Yes, the links and whatnot need to be updated, as others have said.. but I don't mind simple forums without all the bells and whistles.
I've seen forums that allow the left column to be collapsed as well, which would be good for people who have low resolutions, and/or have to keep their browser windows very tiny while sneaking around the internet at work (like me lol).. but again, it's nothing major!
EDIT:
Oh yea, I personally like the "best reply" thing, AND the tiny medal icon! It would be cool if it did something though.. maybe gave you a small bonus chunk of "points" on your way to ranking up or something.
Paged links to long threads
Paged links to long threads from the thread listing pages would be useful, rather than having to click on the link to the thread and then scroll to the bottom to hit the last page link.
Tony is probably considering quietly changing the thread title from "sometime this year" to "sometime in the distant future" Laughing out loud
Actually I'm right onto it
Actually I'm right onto it as far as functionality goes.
Locally I have an updated version and am playing around with different modules and settings.
The main concern for me is the design which requires some major work.
Oi, Tyssen! I was first - please see 17. above Laughing out loud....but it didn't get a guernsey Sad
By the by Tony what about #16?.
Liked Deuce's idea of the "checklist" though, I've often wondered whether you lot have all the thread numbers memorised or a bunch of post-it notes "#1234=validate, #9876=Doctype01" stuck to the side of your screens Tongue
We could also use url alias to give specific topics an easier to remember url.
Good-oh. The list of subscriptions frustrates me because it unticks the thread you look at to remind yourself what it was about and then you have to remember to tick it again. Just don't change what ever Hugo uses to track me! - wouldn't want him to be able to lose me Tongue
Re #15
The comment about getting to other forums the long way round. Really the only need to go to another forum is a new post. What about a New Post button which then has some sort of popup/drop down list of forums to choose which one to post in?
~~New~~
#20. Would an extra column in Recent Posts (to the left of the thread titles) with the thread number in it be handy?
Hey Tony, I know I'm not one of the long time regulars here (only been coming here for a little over a year), but if you'd like any help at all on this, I'd love to be able to try a few things. If you don't like anything I do, I'm cool with that, I'm a pretty easy going person. Maybe just putting together some photoshop mockups.
Also, are you looking to change the logo at all?
Yes that would be
Yes that would be fantastic.
I haven't really made any moves with the design so far.
I'm looking at a complete overhaul, including logo.
So as I see it I could set up a competition and have everyone choose the one they liked.
Or I could ask SpeakOut, a design company I do a lot of work for, to do the work.
I will continue to mess with the site structure and put together something that shows what needs to be designed. That way you and anyone else interested will know what's required.
Then we can choose what way to go from there.
That's not a bad idea. You could create a bit of buzz around the forum if you promote right on forums, blogs, Twitter etc.
I agree. The more ideas the merrier and thanks to Downtap for being enthusiastic and starting things off. Smile
Maybe Tony could give some dimension guidelines for entries though so we get an idea what it looks like at a comparable size? e.g. the current one is about 135px high (including the tabs)
I quite like it. I'm not sure the link between the seed and CSS is that obvious though. Some might look at it and wonder what plants have to do with web design.
Downtap that's a great
Downtap that's a great start, nice fresh design.
Before everyone jumps in with designs give me time to work out a structure and guidelines for the competition.
It is good to know there are a couple of people interested in the competition.
