Hello Folks Smiling

I'm a couple of weeks late to celebrate hanging around this forum for a year but since I still lurk from time to time I figured I'd give an anniversary update .

The last post I made I reported that the Mission wanted to adopt the site "as soon as possible". Eeeerm...yes, well. Four months on, nothing further has been discussed or done about it. Why does this not surprise anyone? Ah well. Such is life.

That doesn't change my experience here though, and since the update was so short, I thought I would include a big mushy thank you as well...so save/print it so you can refer to it when the bozos... ummm... tick... you off

This is a very special forum. If it can't be fixed here, chances are it can't be fixed.

My heroes.... You've all stepped up to sort me out at one time or another once you found out I wasn't really scary, just eerrm...blonde mostly. Weeell, maybe I was a little bit scary. I see Tyssen has given up on the 'escape' thingy and is trying a new tack. Or was it just that you all finally took pity on Hugo?

Aaaah...Sir Hugo... how should I rhapsodize about our days and nights together? Hmmm? Roll eyes to heaven

...the night you held my (cyber) hand and took me out to the server – I was such a scaredy cat.

... the "phantom editor" LOL!

...the way you gently persuaded me to do your bidding...

Quote:
Smee: NOooooooo!!! It was almost my first success! BC (b4 csscreator). It shrinks! It stretches! NOooooooo!!! Puleeeeez don't make me do it (sobbing hysterically!)

Hugo: Yeeeeees!

And all those before, after and in-between times where you gave of your knowledge, patience – well mostly Smiling ...and all the laughs along the way. I must have frustrated you no end at times, but to your credit you never gave up on me, without you in those first few threads I know I would have abandoned it.

And look what we did everyone!
It's a sight!
I mean a site.
And I've got a Doctype!
And it validates! LOL! (Well it did the last time I looked anyway)

I probably won't be around much since I can't give any useful advice. I'm sort of separating from the website and trying to break my addiction to the forum, it does have a sort of semi-permanent tab in FF Smiling

So I repeat what I've said before...and in everyone's honour I've added it as a sig line...as a reminder, just in case anyone ever reads those duck threads

Mods and gurus – THANK YOU!
For your time, knowledge and experience so willingly and generously given.
Please come back tomorrow and sort us all out again Smiling

Shocked Was I that harsh Smiling

Sorry to hear all that effort you put in to the site hasn't been used; that is really irritating, but not surprising, all too often people/organizations fail to understand the amount of time something like that takes, feels bit like a slap in the face; just hope that you can make some use of the knowledge you gained on a more fruitful project.

Hope you keep on lurking, try and keep your skills honed.

Do you mean what I used to have in my signature? Tony made some changes to the way code is parsed when creating a post now so it's not necessary any more.

Well, I wondered where you

Well, I wondered where you had gone.

These people are being very impolite and inconsiderate of your efforts. Had you simply done the work on your own hook, they'd owe you nothing. But, you had discussions with them, and they requested changes and made suggestions. For that reason, they owe you a certain amount of respect that they haven't exhibited.

I would recommend you go before this board and explain that you have spent time in planning, consultation, design and implementation, all with their implied, if not explicit, approval. Further, you should point out that you have offered this work at no charge, that in the real world would have cost them hrs×rate (eg. 100hrs×$75.) plus training and maintenance. After you lay that out, give them a deadline, say a week, to publish. Explain that after that date, the offer to donate the work is withdrawn, and if they wish to use your work, they must pay as would anyone else; don't back down.

It is my experience that people respect you and your work in proportion to the cost. Give it away for free, and you get zip back in respect. I have, since I learned that, always invoiced the work at full price, then made a charitable gift in the form of a credit. Pay the bill for them, but never give away the work itself.

cheers,

gary

Not always. I've done troubleshooting for free before on jobs posted on freelancer sites (because the time spent finding the fault wasn't worth charging for) that has resulted in the job poster becoming a regular client.

That's in situations where the other party expected to pay but got something for free. And then there's just answering questions on forums where there's no expectation of getting paid or having to pay and yet two of my most regular clients have to come to me that way.

Oh I wouldn't call it harsh Smiling I must have felt like a second job for nearly 5 months and while there may have been some kind hearts who winced for me occasionally when I got my fingers slapped, I would suggest there were more times they rolled their eyes with a silent "I'm glad it's Hugo" Laughing out loud However I also had a lot of giggles along the way and I hope you did too.

You've no idea the number of people who are soooo impressed! You're not seriously suggesting you'd be up for another one! Laughing out loud Shocked Laughing out loud

I think that's why I still keep trying to stay tuned – you never know!

I have always appreciated the way you think Gary Smiling While I understand completely the point you are making, I shall probably "let sleeping dogs lie" for the moment. Mainly because, if and when they do come back to it, it will need a professional to tidy up the loose ends and wrap it in a CMS so they can do updates. Discussions will open of their own accord at that time, as I certainly don't intend to land myself with a forever job of my own making. No doubt they will then learn the costs involved.

Thanks guys! I really am very grateful to you all Smiling

We are always ready and able to help, I would hate the thought that the effort put in and the knowledge you have gained was for nothing as there is little that is worse than wasted time, put the experience to use and at least you can shrug off the fact that they didn't use that particular work and use the time and experience gained towards another more fruitful endeavour.
