Why do you want to tweak

Why do you want to fix something that is initially the wrong way to go anyway? And why do you return here, when you ignore the recommended way how to create a navigation? Besides, IDs are unique, you are using the id button several times in your document. You have also an open div between contact and career.

There are a couple ways that you can accomplish this. You can try giving a unique id to each list item. Then, in your CSS file, set a background image for each id.
