Hi Dugal,
The grace period seems to be determined by the registrar.
To renew an expired domain it's you have about 30 days.
An expired domain may be deleted after about 40 days.
There are sites that let you buy or at least register your interest in expired domains.
dugal, there are some underhand tricks associated with dns registration. Some people scan registries for expiring domain names and register them as soon as they expire. These people have automated tools and accounts with registrars to do this. They exploit the 72hour (or whatever it is) window to avoid paying for the domain name, handing it back before any money is due.
One particular DNS operator has a (bad) habit of registering the names checked by people on its site. They say its a service to ensure the same user can return and register the name later. As above they'll hand the name back before any money is due, but in that period that particular name can only be acquired from that operator.
Googling will get your more information on these practices.
