AVG free edition scanner; includes email proxy scanning quite configurable, sanitises emails, can remove all .exe files or remove any file extension designated, etc. works and is free!

Security? Who cares about security when Office '07 causes Outlook Express's spell checker to speak only French?
Let's get our priorities right.

What squiggles? I'm looking for squiggles right now.
My favorite text editor.

Hehe...
So do I - my mac mini is great.
I can even run more versions of IE than I could ever run on my Windows machines
. It'd be nice to have a GUI to handle .rar or .7z files.
Triumph, do you use xcode at all?

Doesn't bother me much seems to be fine surprisingly on such a small screen.
Textwrangler seems to be the best choice for editor unless one wants to pay for it's big brother.
Chris you've got your 'mini', cor duo? upgraded?

zip files with silly extensions
I have a 1.83 Core Duo,
I have a 1.83 Core Duo, refurbished from the apple store. Its upgraded to 2GB and 160GB HDD (I did that myself). I haven't got it running server stuff yet. My W2KPro licence is from an HP Laptop and seems to be non-transferable. VMWare will make a virtual appliance from a running machine, but I need to figure out how to get it to save it somewhere.
WinRAR is excellent. Both formats get much better compression than .zip, .7z is better than .rar and completely open source. There are console only versions of both for the Mac, but afaik no gui front ends.
1024 x 768 ... I can plugin any screen I want - and once the new Dell wide screens filter through to Europc I'll probably get one of them.

My local Apple store does refurbs at pretty good prices, all units generally seem to have been returned for some petty little reason like malfunctioning switches so I aim to go that route , yet I'm still slightly put off with the fact that immediately you have to gut the thing and up the storage on both counts.
For this particular purpose,
For this particular purpose, yes. You could always pay Apple prices to have apple do it for you - it'll cost more and you don't have the spares to sell on ebay. Be aware getting inside isn't straight forward, but now I know how to do it, it isn't too difficult. I can send you links on various upgrade instructions if you should need them (or once I have mine set up, make me an offer for it
)
What I didn't know at the time was you can upgrade the processor in a Core Solo to Core Duo (or Core 2 Duo - merom), so you can start with a Core Solo model. Check out you local PC World store they may have one as a demo model - which they would probably jump at the chance to sell you at a large ex-display discount. Mine had one, but it didn't work
.

It makes far more sense to do it oneself as you have the original units in the event of problems, that and the fact that I'm a die hard tinkerer and have to do this stuff my self.
I've looked at some online walkthroughs on upgrading and it's not that simple but then again look at the size of the thing!
Interesting that you can upgrade the processor didn't realise that, thought that was one thing you couldn't do.
What you'll have to do is a detailed step by step guide to getting it all sever (I chickened out and installed MAMP)/networked up along with the vmware setup/configuration then I'll just crib that from you

One thing. The best walk-thrus were for PPC models which are slightly different. You can usually find odd pictures or descriptions to fill in the gaps when you run into a difference.
Another thing I didn't find notes on - sliding the harddisk on to its connector. With the unit upside down, the harddisk doesn't have a surface to rest on that is inline with the connector. I made a sling out of an old anti-static bag and that worked a treat.
And most importantly, have a glue stick to hand to keep the end of your screw driver sticky enough to hold screws in place.

They can take Core 2 Duos also.

VMWare is really easy. The only problem I had was not being able to install the OS from CD. No matter the CD it always said it wasn't bootable. Possibly I hadn't set something corretly. I simply made ISO images on my PC. That worked for XP and NT4.
I was going to go with XAMPP. What versions come with MAMP - I couldn't see any indication on their website?
Oops, found them ... http://www.mamp.info/en/releases.php
Blimey, how times change.
Blimey, how times change. I've been using Macs since the first model back in the eighties and this is the first time I've ever seen such an enthusiastic and rapidly formed thread about Macs on a forum that isn't for Mac fans. Not one flaming troll - good show

For the sort of work we do, it appears to be a better platform than a PC.
For any who are interested there are a whole host of refurbished MacBookPro's, both 15" and 17" available today
.
No flames from me, I have
No flames from me, I have fallen head over heals for my little iBook, and play with it a lot, just wish it was a cor duo.
The sudden enthusiasm stems partly from the attraction of VM; I was taken with the claims for 'Parallels' and Chris happened to mention the notion of reducing OS box clutter with a single Mac running XP/Linux etc.
I saw a setup running recently that just blew me away cos it looked so cooool The web devy/admin chap had everything running on the one box, each OS on what seemed to be a side of a virtual cube; switching OS spun the cube to present a different face and OS
Chris I was going to install Xampp then happened across MAMP and thought I might as well install A Mac specific offering but not sure it was the best choice, I do like the XAMPP projects they just seem to be well configured and it comes with ftp server I had to setup Pure-FTPd and I'm glad I did as I wasted a fair bit of time trying to figure webdav and failed miserably.
A better platform? I think
A better platform? I think that it's possibly come of age, we have what is arguably a far superior GUI than Windows which is built on what is not arguably a far superior kernal, offering the best of both GUI environments and UNIX file system/cli approaches, the sooner I really can make the break from the slightly non standard approach to everything that Windows takes the better.
Just wish I could understand those funny squiggles on the keys.

That sounds really neat.
I don't have the spinning cube. But I do have most of the OS. I still need to get IIS on to it, that's about it.
The spinning cube was
The spinning cube was probably Fast User Switching with each user running a different OS and an Applescript making the switch between them.

Spot on T thats exactly what
Spot on T thats exactly what it was 'fast user switching' so you dont need to log off a user a and log on as user b just switch between user xp to user Mac to user linux, outstanding and it did look super cool in action
Gary I know I have to install the emu, installed textwrangler which looks adequate, but still not quite the full monty.
are you sure it wasn't
are you sure it wasn't Parallels?
I love my TextWrangler

I think it was a possible/probable combination of both? I hadn't realised that 'fast user switching' and that cube effect was a feature of OS X, just enabled it and set myself up as multiple users and having much fun sitting here spinning the cube
just need to get rid of the password dialogue box.
Using TextWrangler at the moment seems alright but miss simple features like my file browser pane and tabbed files also just got somewhat frustrated having found the 'Disk Browser' and had it display the contents of the file I wanted to edit why my keyboard appeared to be disabled
until I realised my error, well it looked as though I could edit from that display, new stuff it's just frustrating for people with diminished faculties.

I'm doubting that it's a combination. How can the fast user switching of Mac OS recognize and switch to a user of another OS? Parallels has the same cube rotation capability as the fast user switching, which is what I'm putting my money on.
Well I originally thought
Well I originally thought that it was 'Parellels' and by the sound of it likely was then, sort of thought that possibly one fast switched to user b who was running a different OS but thinking about it that doesn't make sense as possible.
Yeah found the alt+3 combo, don't know that I can get used to having to do that it's also badly positioned on the laptop layout to do that quickly, That's one big minus point against me Mac
I hate to sound too naive,
I hate to sound too naive, but where would you normally find it?
On a UK keyboard it has it's
On a UK keyboard it has it's own key directly to the left of the return key which seems a comfortable position and doesn't require combos along with the other commonly used ',' ';' etc.
Ah, you lucky brits! I,
Ah, you lucky brits! I, using a US layout, have never thought twice about the shift-3 for the 'pound' sign (pun intended).
It could have been Virtue
It could have been Virtue Desktops or maybe a pre-release/beta version of Leopard's Spaces
Hmm both those look
Hmm both those look interesting, I'm not sure what it was but just want to be able spin the cube and have a different OS
can someone tell me if I can do please tanx
