Hi

We've had a thread about places to see good design. But, as I teach this to school kids, I thought it was about time I updated the awful sites I show them.

So, folks, have you come across a really bad site (genuine sites folks, ie from authors who seriously thought they were doing good, as opposed to a five year old doing web design for the first time)? Post the url here please. I am especially looking for ones that are:

eye-wrenchingly color sickening
grossly flashy content that has no stickiness (user appeal, the type of page you accidently find and leave wondering what THAT was all about)
so massively busy that you can't find anything (has to be MUCH worse than the mtv site)
so dark and unreadable that it puts you into an instant depression and you go and slit your wrists.

Got the idea?

Thanks for any help in advance, you lovely folks.

Do NOT post your own sites (after all, they won't qualify, will they?).

I would prefer HOME/INDEX pages only folks Laughing out loud

Show me some REALLY bad sites

Hi

In the UK, schools are VERY strict on Internet viewing policies, the word sh*t appears a few times, and that is a no-no for under 18's.

For example, our filter won't allow the kids to go find out about Sussex University, you can guess why.

I have to recommend sites to look at/visit rather than allow free surfing, so that I can check for content. Obviously this is fraught with problems of workload, but such is life.

I was contacted by my favorite local gun shop to do a web page (still haven't signed off on the contract after 10 months ) and they pointed me to this monstrosity as an example of what they wanted.

Hi Triumph

(BTW did you know that name is famous in the UK as a rather nice range of female underwearhttp://www.triumph.com/uk/index.php, as well as the great motorcycles http://www.triumph.co.uk/?)

Anyway, I digress. Other banned subject matter:

Violence,
S*x,
Guns,
Hacking,
Religion (can only be taught by specific teachers within very restricted contexts)

But thanks anyway (enjoy the links, isn't the music on one of them nasty?)

Hi

1. 5 star, shame it is religious.
2. 4 star.
3. Another rule - English only please (I KNOW many far east sites are THAT bad!)
4. Quality. Just HOW many link buttons can you have on one page?
5. Not a *real* site, but fun!
6. 3 star, a good example of lets put everything on one page and find a pointless boring background. Would you stay there? NO WAYYY.
7. 4 star. That really was made by the owner's dog, yes?
8. 3 Star.
9. 4 star. Would you rely on these folk to help your business. You'd die first.
10. 2 star, How could anyone serious do this?
11. 4 star. Identify a niche market an go for it. Banking for one year olds.
12. 5 star. Truly astounding.
13. 2 star. This should be termed teflon content.

You are a star

Show me some REALLY bad sites

Hi folks

Well, I reckon that's enough to keep my classes laughing for a few years.

We all agreed on the 3 worst:

1. http://www.timecube.com/
2. http://www.dokimos.org/ajff/
3. http://www.takamagahara.com/printin/

So, no more please. UNLESS, you can find some that are worse!

The kids I showed these to today (aged14-16) all thought the author of timecube needed certifying.

I missed the second one the first time around. I nearly have a fit, and there is nothing wrong with me. not sure my retina are ever going to recover...

I said the marquee tag is back. obviously we have no clue on this forum. at least our friendsters have now brought it to our attention!

Hehe, here's one of my early works. It should meet the criteria. It IS a rollover-lover's paradise. However, by weight, there's more javascript on this site than mark-up and CSS combined. Let's see, it also uses tables, lol. The biggest problem with this site is it's extremely inaccessible. How inaccessible you may ask. Well go to the About page or something and view the content with your browser (there's a lot). Use the links next to the center content area. Now, View Source, even with other than default content selected. You won't see it. The content of the site doesn't show up. The whole site is ONE GIANT ARRAY. I thought it was neat at the time, lol.

It's stashed in my portfolio... I have no pride I guess Smile
Pretty Damn Bad

EDIT: Hahaha, it IS valid though... I just checked.

I'd like to remind the readers of this thread that many sites generated by content management systems still use tables for layouts, are heavy on the javascript and offer poorly designed themes. Especially the one-man bands that offer cms-es rarely focus on the CSS details. Check the homepages of these cms-es and they will link to many case studies which prove my point.

Another thing worth mentioning is that - ironically - not all usability organisations, of which there are many worldwide in all shapes and forms (government funded, self-proclaimed, consulting firms doing usability on the side) have poorly designed websites and do not conform to web usability standards at all.

After researching some competition here in my hometown, I found this in the portfolio of one of my competitors. Warning: the color may hurt your eyes. This site and this one as well are done by the same company. While not terrible designs in and of themselves. you'd think that having actual content on the page would be nice. As these are menus for restaurants, I should be able to view more than two items at 1280x1024. They are also a bit "Front Page"-ey, not something you'd expect from a professional designer.
