More and more mobile/handheld

More and more mobile/handheld devices are visiting the web each month. Most new mobile phone are web enabled. Data charges and speeds of mobile networks make browsing most sites slow and hard to use.
So I am wondering how far you go to meet the demands of an ever growing visitor group. If you have had clients specifically ask for mobile versions of websites it would be good to know about it so post a comment.
I had a couple of requests last week to build iPhone apps but haven't really had any requests for mobile sites.

Was going to select 'Only if client Requests it' simply as dealing with this aspect is still relatively time consuming and would perhaps be better offered to the client as an option; however in reality sites working on mobile devices will become expected sooner rather than later so all developers should get comfortable with working this aspect into their site builds as a matter of course.

I been expecting mobile web surfing and sites to take off for years now and it hasn't really happened. When it does we may all be busy creating new versions of old site Smile

Yes I too have sort of been waiting for the explosion in mobile browsing but it's never really happened, I think partly due to silly pricing structures in the UK where if not carefull you could end up with a very large bill for surfing a few image heavy sites. It's slowly changed now and contracts and tariffs in general allow for better deals. With the advent of the iPhone it's at last possible to see that true internet surfing is possible, it might be a smallish screen but it's a true and proper browser, now the mobile world WILL kick off, and I still feel somewhat unprepared, but haven't much study time to devote to things at the moment, but do know that I absolutely have to get up to speed on this as do all developers. It will come to pass that more people access sites via mobile devices than full blown computers. There are plenty of people that don't have computers but there are very few that don't have a mobile phone, these people are a new audience and all the others with both will be starting to use their mobile device more and more.
